Borovets, the first and most famous Bulgarian mountain resort, is situated on the northern slopes of the Rila Mountain at an altitude of 1300 meters. The resort enjoys a perfect location right at the foot of Mount Musala (2925 m), the highest peak on the Balkans. Only 72 km away from Sofia and just 126 km away from Plovdiv, Borovets is easily accessible from all parts of Bulgaria.


In the summer Borovets is just as marvellous as it is in the winter. It offers everything a perfect vacation needs: clean and fresh air, serene centuries-old pine forests, green meadows sprinkled with fragrant flowers and herbs, blue lakes and majestic snow-capped peaks. For nature-lovers the resort is a favourite vacation spot and starting point of many hiking routes in the Rila Mountains. And when the sun has gone down, the resort begins to pulse with the numerous lights of the nightlife...

Borovets is the oldest Bulgarian winter resort with a history that dates back to 1896. Today Borovets is the biggest skiing center in the country in terms of length and capacity of ski runs and lifts. It is situated on the northern slopes of the Musala ridge in the eastern part of Rila mountain. Huddled in venerable pine woods over 1300m above sea level it is the perfect place for winter sports and recreation.
 
The winter in the resort is mild and snowy. The average temperature in January - the coldest month is about 4.8°C. The ski season usually spans from mid-December till April.
The resort offers excellent conditions for winter sports: alpine skiing, snowboarding and cross country.
The alpine runs of Borovets offer excellent conditions for snowboarding. In addition, in the high parts of Rila Mountain, in the Markudjik Ski Center, during high season the snow reaches over 2 meters of depth, providing unlimited opportunitie.
 
There are three ski centers in Borovets ski resort:
 
Sitnyakovo ski center – starting from 1337 m altitude up to 1780 m.
Yastrebetz ski center – from 1340 m up to 2369 m.
Markudjik ski center – from 2144 m up to 2550 m.
 
The resort offers excellent conditions for winter sports: alpine skiing, cross country, and snowboarding. There are 58 km of marked ski runs for alpine skiing.
The cross country trails are 35 km long, designed according to the requirements of FIS (Fédération Internationale de Ski), at minimum width of 6 m.
Biathlon facilities - in 1993 Borovets hosted the World Biathlon Championship.

The absolute silence of mountain wilderness, the brilliant whiteness of fresh powder, a cloudless sky and the sweet smell of pine – all they make for a fabulous day of cross country skiing in Borovets. The resort offers cross-country skiers at any skill level a wide range of terrain to enjoy this popular sport.
 

Snowmaking

The snowmaking system is working full-time during the ski season. Snowmaking facilities, as well as night skiing, on ski runs “Rila”, “Iglika”, “Martinovi Baraki 2” and “Martinovi Baraki 3” (altogether 2300 m) are also available. Six mobile snow–guns are installed on every 80 meters along the ski runs. The runs are sound-tracked and lit up by modern lighting systems, installed on 54 posts and meeting all European standards. s for the freestylers.
